vof north loop (petrified wood)

On a warm day in February we did the north petrified wood loop with  a different path. From duck rock parking we headed toward the rock but dropped down into the wash by the 1915 inscription.

We turned right in Magnesite wash and then left to go through the tall red rocks north of there.

Looking back from the pass in the tall red rocks.

This was our first route to the area where we walked mostly up roads and washes before coming to anything interesting.

This improved route gets interesting sooner.  After getting to the northernmost point of the route the trail passes through a lot of petrified wood as it proceeds south toward magnesite wash. We ended up taking two different washes along this south section on the north side of magnesite wash and both had lots of petrified wood. It was 6 miles and 1000 ft gain.

This is a pool in Magnesite wash where you come out. Turn right for a few hundred yards then left into Gibraltar wash to get back to the cars.

The pole is set to 1 meter long. The largest piece of petrified wood found.

There are also Moqui balls there of the black heave kind.

This is a wash we went down that turned out to be the wrong wash and we had to climb over a hill into the right wash. There was, however, tons of petrified wood in this wash as well.
