Escalante UT

We stayed in Escalante and did two days of exploring. First was to Calf Creek falls off Hwy 12.

On the way to Calf Creek falls there are two grainerys and one set of pictographs we could see. This is one of the grainerys. It was high up the opposite cliff and looked impossible to get to.

This is the pictograph. It is also on the opposite canyon wall about half way up. There is a trail brochure available that describes the locations of the pictographs and the grainerys

Arriving at calf creek falls after 3 miles of easy trail. It is about 130 feet high and has a large swimming hole at the base. It was too cold for swimming when we were there.

 Upper part of the falls.
 Some people swam anyway.

 One wildflower we saw. Spiderwort.

After the falls we stopped by the trail to 100 Hands, a nice set of petroglyphs only 1/2 mile from the highway. You can see them from the highway from the pull out on top of the ridge just west of the escalante river bridge.

Our group in front of one set of petroglyphs. You can see cut marks where someone tried to remove them and take them home.

The 100 Hands. Really more like 150 hands.

Part of the trail to the petroglyphs. Had to climb up on a bench and walk along the cliff face.

Set of petroglyphs on the left end of the cliff face.

Second day was rainy and foiled our plan to do slot canyons off Hole in the rock road. Instead we drove out hwy 12 to Boulder then east on Burr trail to Capital Reef NP where the pavement ends.

The land scape changed from the white slickrock around escalante to red rock canyons like Zion.

That afternoon the rain had stopped so we drove 12 miles down Hole in the Rock to Devils Garden. The road was very muddy and not recommended.
