South Fork Indian canyon Pictographs

This was my first attempt to see this site. The write-ups said the road had deep sand and was suited to 4x4 only. It is very near Kanab and can be pinpointed on Google satelite. Basically, drive north of  Kanab past the Moki Cave tourist trap and turn left on Hancock road toward Coral Pink Sand Dunes. As you get almost to the first dunes a dirt road forks left to go on the left (east) side of the dunes. It is about 6 miles down this road, then a left for 1.7 miles to the trail head parking lot. The last 1.7 mile is very curvy and narrow. There is no place to pass if you meet someone. Each curve is banked high with a steep dip and liberal patches of deep sand. The Subaru made it anyway.

This is the parking lot at the end. We were the only visitors.

The trail is obvious and easy to follow. It heads out to a point and then switchbacks left halfway             into the canyon. RT is less than 2 miles, and elevation loss/gain is around 300ft (estimated).  For             sure NOT the 1700 feet that the sign says.

            Desert Larkspur.

            Penstemon

The trail starts out sandy and is uphill on the return.

As the trail switchbacks down there is a safety fence for the slightly exposed section.

Lower end of the fence section.

                Alpine Clemantis.

There is a fence, rope, and boardwalk at the site to encourage people to stand back. It is at a                     good distance for photography.

The most distinctive Pic there, and the most photographed one.

I like these faces a lot too.

This one is on the far right in the shadow of a recess.

I highly recommend this trip to those looking for a short hike with a longer drive on a "jeep road"
