North Bowl of Fire, 3/02/17

This hike is a loop from mm20, to mm18. 8.5 miles total length. Could be shortened by driving up the wash instead of starting from the paved road.

Starting out toward the North Bowl of fire. We started from mm 20 and walked the ridge to some washes till we came to Callville wash where we turned left , then right after a short distance to catch a small wash heading toward the red rock wall.

Some columns in the slot leading to the balcony.

The lead up to the slot that goes to the Balcony

On the way back we passed these columns

The only wild flower in bloom we saw. It is a kind of vetch.

Overview of the route.

First leg detail from parking at mm20 along the ridge before dropping into the wash.

Passing by black butte and turning left in Callville wash. Then turning right at a small wash heading toward the main red rock wall in North bowl. But you have to work your way northwest over a ridge before there is a view of your destination.

Going up the cleft you pass a large area of breakdown then the canyon narrows. There is a left turn in a small side canyon where you have to immediately climb up about 10 feet to a rabbit hole to continue. The traverse of the high country ends up at the wash on the west side of North Bowl where you follow it south to the cars.

Following the wash south, there is one right turn where your wash joins a larger wash. visible in the center, lower third of this slide.

Then you follow this larger wash to Callville wash crossing it at 90 degrees and heading toward the parking at MM18 (3/4 mile distant in a south southwest direction).
