Moab, Devils garden primative loop trail.

At the end of the paved road in Arches is the only published long hike in the park. It starts out paved but continues on a cairned track that is sometimes confusing. It is about 7 miles long, but with some side trips it can be closer to 9 miles, which is what we did.

This is Landscape arch. It is at the end of the paved part of the trail, and where the "primitive" portion starts.

 Landscape arch is very thin.
On September 1, 1991, a 73-foot slab of rock fell out from underneath the thinnest section of the span. This was captured on video by a Swiss tourist who happened to be behind the arch at the time.  On June 5, 1995, a 47-foot mass of rock fell from the front of the thinnest section of the arch, followed by another 30-foot rock fall on June 21. Due to these events the Park Service has closed the loop trail that once led underneath the arch.

Just past Landscape arch is the first scrambling section up this fin. Note: the fins here are different from the fins in Little Finland. Part of the group decided to stop here and explore some on their own.

A short distance pass the fin is a spur trail to the left leading to Partition arch and Navajo arch. This is Partition arch. You return the same way and continue on the loop.

 Another angle on Partition arch.

The other part of the spur trail to Navajo arch.

A serious photographer backing up to get the perfect angle a log in the sand.....just kidding.

The trail on top of a flat fin. Here the hikers that went around the first scramble at Landscape arch met up with us again and turned back again because of the exposure and the wind was about 35 mph and sand was blowing in our eyes.

This is double O arch. It is an over and under arch. This is the furthest part of the loop from the cars but we went further on a spur trail to Dark Angel.

Another angle on Double O arch from the other side. From Double O arch the trail cuts west and meets a cliff, turns north, and goes to Dark Angle. The petroglyphs are on the cliff face below the trail between the 90 ° right turn and Dark Angel.

The Dark Angel. From here we went even further to the petroglyphs past the crack canyon.

After the crack we followed the cliff face keeping as close as possible and saw this first petroglyph.

Following the cliff face is this guy.

 Then these.

A Procession panel of elk.
